Company & Product

Founded in 1976 in the heart of London, Brompton has become a hallmark of innovative urban transportation with its distinctive folding bicycles. These bikes are specifically designed for the challenges of city living, such as navigating crowded public transport and managing compact living spaces, making them an indispensable tool for urban commuters. Each Brompton folding bicycle is known for its unique, self-supporting compact size when stored, blending functionality with style seamlessly.

Producing nearly 50,000 bicycles, Brompton emphasizes design excellence and craftsmanship. Each bicycle is hand-brazed by skilled craftsmen who complete 18 months of rigorous training before earning the privilege to stamp their signature on the bikes they construct. This meticulous attention to detail and personal craftsmanship underpins Brompton’s reputation as a premium bicycle manufacturer.

Helping Brompton achieve enhanced production

As demand for Brompton has grown, so has the complexity of their production requirements. With approximately 1,200 unique components, many requiring bespoke tooling, Brompton faced significant challenges in scaling their production capabilities. At Geomiq, we stepped in to offer our advanced CNC machining expertise, including sophisticated 4- and 5-axis machining, which allowed them to produce more intricate tooling efficiently.

Ravdeep Kalsi, Design Engineer at Brompton, highlighted the benefits of our collaboration: "Geomiq have allowed us to be more creative with machining and ramp up production in London by producing more complex production-line tooling for our factory floor." Enhancing the precision of tooling and enabling greater design innovation has proven crucial in Brompton meeting their manufacturing goals and bringing their products to market faster.

Additionally, working with Geomiq became key during the development of Brompton’s electric bike model. With quotes in less than a day and the turnaround on supply of precision CNC machined parts from five days, Brompton could get their production line tooling to their factory floor faster than traditional manufacturing partners and at a reduced cost.

Outcomes & Results

The collaboration with Geomiq significantly boosted Brompton’s manufacturing process:

  • 25 engineers and procurement specialists at Brompton have been able to access quick turnaround CNC and Sheet Metal parts via Geomiq.
  • Access to 4- and 5-axis on-demand machining capacity via Geomiq has allowed Brompton to design and manufacture more complex tooling to build their folding bikes more easily and to a shorter lead time.
  • Brompton use Geomiq to help produce over 500 different purpose-built press tools, moulds, braze jigs and assembly fixtures, allowing them to build 4,000 bikes per month.
  • Geomiq was instrumental during a critical period when the number of new cyclists in London surged by nearly 120% during the COVID-19 lockdown, pushing Brompton to rapidly scale production to meet the booming demand.

"Geomiq has become a partner who can deliver quality machined parts at a short lead time, enabling Brompton to increase our manufacturing output by rapidly producing more tooling for our factory floor." — Rav, Brompton.
